A recent report has revealed that Microsoft is working on a handheld Xbox gaming console. It was suggested that this console could arrive later this year, but the reality is slightly more complicated. According to a new report from The Verge, a handheld Xbox console is arriving this year, but it will be made by ASUS.
It shouldn’t be surprising that Microsoft might have chosen to work with ASUS on this console. ASUS is no stranger to handheld gaming consoles, so it makes sense that Microsoft chose the company for the Xbox handheld. The Verge reports that Windows will power the console, but its interface could resemble the Xbox.
The report also speculates that Microsoft could launch some certified hardware program so that only approved manufacturers can run this version of Windows. The combination of Windows and an Xbox UI is interesting. Given that many games run on Windows, bringing it to a handheld console would open up many doors to new possibilities.
It would also allow Microsoft to expand its gaming efforts beyond the traditional console. We’re not sure if this handheld will allow gamers to play Xbox games. That would be amazing. As for the rumored Microsoft-branded Xbox, it looks like that might only arrive much later in 2027.
