Android 16 is breaking tradition. In the last decade, Google has released major Android updates towards the later part of the year. But Android 16 will buck that trend with a release date in June.
Google’s President of the Android Ecosystem, Sameer Samat confirmed with Android Police at MWC 2025 that the company is on track to release Android 16 in June. “So far, so good. I’ve never had a release where at this point the bug count was where I wanted it to be, but the team is working really hard, and we’re excited about getting it there.”
We already knew that Google is releasing Android 16 earlier than usual. The company confirmed it back in 2024 ahead of the first Developer Preview. Google’s intention for releasing it earlier is to give its Android partners more time to prepare the update for their own devices. This should result in more eligible Android devices getting Android 16 before the year is out. This compares to past releases some Android devices haven’t received the Android 15 update yet.
Meanwhile, Google has released the second Android 16 beta. This is an open beta so users can try it on their devices ahead of the final release, but proceed at your own risk. Beta software typically contains more bugs than its final release, so using it as your daily driver is inadvisable. June is only three months away, so it looks like Pixel owners have something to look forward to this summer.
